My wife and I started the process of building a house this year.
We had no idea what we were doing at the beginning of the year. We met with a contractor who gave us some tracks to run on.
Then, we met with an architect who helped give us a better vision for our project. He gave us more information and ideas to help us with the project.
We researched tirelessly to see what other people were doing. The first half of the year was all about information gathering.
In June, we broke ground, put a driveway in, and flattened land on the hill behind our current home. We have done much coordinating and finding what we will need for the build.
We aren’t using a traditional building and design company, and building a house is much easier than we thought. And how we do it turns out to be less expensive than we thought.
Lesson: We can do more than we think.
The big lesson is that building a home doesn’t have to be scary and overwhelming. And we can do more of the intellectual work and the purchasing work on our own, which cuts costs and helps us customize our build more.
Next time you have a big dream, I want to encourage you to do some leg work and figure out what it takes to accomplish that dream. Ask around, get some help, read a ton about it, and then decide whether you are willing to dive in.
We will start the building process this spring, and it will be amazing.
